Herb Noble of Maine
We are saddened to report that an end of an era has arrived with the
recent passing of Maine artist Herb Noble. We will miss having his
art to grace our walls and share with our customers.
Herb was born and grew up in Eastport, ME.
Following in his grandfather's artistic shoes, Herb was carving and
painting from age 12. His first work of art was a totem he carved
and painted for his mother's mailbox, using marbles for eyes. Herb
remembers it as "something hideous", but of course, his mother
loved it!

Although
Herb has done some large murals for local businesses and some for the
Maine State Mental Health Dept. Home in Houlton, he says he still gets the
most fun creating the unique items that can be found at the Palabra Shop
in Boothbay Harbor, Maine and right here on our web site. Herb is
the first to admit that he is a self taught artist, as was his grandfather
before him, but he strongly feels his love of the ocean and the art itself
is what guides his hand. |

Growing up on the coast of Maine
instilled a deep love of the ocean so it seemed only natural that Herb would seek a livelihood on "the water"
and in the late 50's he entered the US Navy from which he retired 20 years
later. During his time in the service he continued his artistic
ways, often drawing or painting for his friends. Once he retired he
was able to devote his full time to, as Herb puts it, "his passion to
create". He particularly likes to paint on "something
unexpected", thus explaining his use of old boards, tabletops, doors,
windows, oars, buoys and many "one of a kind items" too numerous
to mention. The traditional slates that are used are all from Maine
quarries.
